What the grid is actually made of.
A rubric holds three pieces of information. The rows are criteria, and they name the things the grader has undertaken to look for. The columns are performance levels, describing the same criterion at different qualities. The number attached to each row is its weight, and it says where the marks live, which is seldom where the effort naturally goes.
Reading therefore begins with the weights rather than at the top of the page. A criterion carrying a fifth of the assignment deserves a fifth of the writing and rather more than a fifth of the thinking; a criterion carrying a token amount deserves competence and nothing further. Students who spend their best hours polishing an introduction are usually working from a document that never mentioned introductions.

- Weights: the share of the grade each row carries, which sets your time budget
- Verbs: analyze, evaluate, apply, describe, each demanding a different kind of paragraph

The gap between the top two columns is the assignment.
Compare the top band against the one immediately below it, criterion by criterion, and read only what changes between them. That difference is the assignment. In most rubrics the lower band describes work that is correct, and the top band describes work that is correct and does one further thing: names a specific case, weighs an alternative, cites something current, quantifies a claim, or connects the point back to the argument the paper is making.
The wording is deliberate and it repeats. Where a criterion says analyze, a paragraph that describes will be scored in the second column however gracefully it is written; where it says evaluate, a paragraph listing options without choosing between them has not evaluated. Lifting the top band's own verbs into your outline as working headings is a crude technique, and it works.
The criteria that are not on the grid.
Rubrics rarely restate requirements that live in the prompt, the syllabus or the course's style policy, and graders apply those anyway. Length, source count, permitted source types, the citation manual, the file format and the submission mechanism are the usual suspects, and a paper can satisfy every row of the grid and still lose marks to a page limit that nobody put in a row.
So the working document is the rubric and the prompt read together and reconciled before drafting starts. Where the two disagree, and occasionally they do, the sensible move is a short message to the instructor asking which governs. That message costs a minute, is entirely ordinary, and carries the useful side effect of demonstrating that the rubric was read at all.

Before submitting, set the rubric beside the finished draft and score yourself row by row, writing down the sentence or paragraph that satisfies each criterion. Rows for which you cannot name a location are rows the grader will not find either. This is not an exercise in optimism; the point is to discover the two or three criteria that were assumed rather than answered, while there is still an evening in which to answer them.
Where a criterion is genuinely covered but scattered across four pages, the repair is signposting rather than rewriting: one sentence using the criterion's own language, pulling the evidence into a single place a reader will pass. The mechanics rows are the cheapest marks on any rubric to lose and the cheapest to recover, and the note on reference lists covers most of them. Where the ideas are sound and the rows are the difficulty, that is the ordinary daily work of the copy desk.
- Name the paragraph that satisfies each row; an unnamed row is an unearned row
- Check the three heaviest rows first, since between them they decide the grade
- Read the top band aloud and ask whether your draft would honestly be described that way
- Confirm the prompt's own requirements: length, source count, style manual, file format
- Repair signposting before prose, because graders credit what they can find

What is the difference between a criterion and a performance level?
A criterion is a row and names a thing being judged, such as use of evidence or organization. A performance level is a column and describes that same thing at a given quality, from the top band downward. Marks are awarded by deciding which column your work occupies in each row, which is why the columns, not the rows, hold the instructions.
Should I reuse the rubric's wording in my headings?
Yes, within reason. Headings that echo the criteria help a grader locate the evidence for each row, and that is most of what a grader is doing. The limit is that a paper made entirely of rubric language reads mechanically, so use the wording to label sections and your own prose to fill them. Check whether the course prescribes a heading structure first.
What if the rubric and the prompt disagree?
Ask the instructor which governs, in a short message that quotes both. Disagreements usually mean a rubric was reused from an earlier version of the assignment, and instructors would generally rather answer the question than mark the consequence. If no reply arrives before the deadline, satisfy both requirements where that is possible and note the conflict briefly in your submission comment.
Why do mechanics and formatting rows carry real weight?
Because they are the only rows a grader can score with total confidence and no reading. Citation format, page setup and reference accuracy are checkable in a minute, which makes them reliable and therefore popular with rubric writers. They are also the only criteria on the sheet you can guarantee before submitting, which makes surrendering them an odd choice.
