Marks live in the rubric, so the rubric is read first.
Most papers that disappoint their authors are not badly written; they are badly aimed. A criterion asks for evaluation and receives description, or asks for application to a case and receives a general discussion, and the grader marks what is in front of them rather than what was intended. No amount of polish repairs a paragraph pointed in the wrong direction.
An editor therefore reads the rubric before the draft, works out where each criterion is meant to be satisfied, and checks whether the paper does that in a place a reader will find it. Headings, topic sentences and signposting are adjusted so the assessor never has to hunt for the evidence of a criterion being met.

Structure before sentences, never the other way round.
Editing a paragraph that should not exist is a waste of an evening. The first pass is structural: whether the argument arrives in a usable order, whether each claim carries evidence, whether the paragraph that opens a section is doing the work the section needs done. Occasionally that pass concludes that two pages should become one.
Only once the shape holds does the desk work at sentence level, tightening what is loose and cutting the throat-clearing that opens most academic paragraphs. A source that cannot be found is worse than no source, because it invites a question about everything else in the paper. How quickly can a paper be turned around?
A day is workable for most standard-length essays and shorter is sometimes possible, though a compressed deadline costs more because it displaces scheduled work rather than filling a gap. The useful question is what an earlier deadline buys: the same paper commissioned a week out comes back better, since checking sources takes as long as it takes.
Which style manuals are covered?
APA, AMA, MLA and Turabian, applied in the edition the course actually requires rather than the most recent one published. Reference lists are checked entry by entry against the sources themselves, since formatting a citation correctly does not make it real, and it is the unreal ones that cause a student genuine trouble.
Will the paper still sound like me?
